Other collecting interests

Post by Tin Soldier »

Just saw we hadn't continued this from the old board! Does anyone here, especially the Erasure release collectors, have any other collecting hobbies?

I'm looking at you @mikedepaz ;)

In my youth I ran the gamut of typical American hobbies like stamps, coins, railroad models, toys (Dr. Who, especially), etc. As an adult I continued with early Walkman/Discman models, and synths, of course, but still have a continued interest in some, and a smattering of all. :hyperdalek:

I’ve collected “V”-related merch since the popular sci-fi show was on the air in the ‘80s, although I’ve been selling some of my collection in recent times.

That’s awesome @MikeyC, I loved V!! I know they remade it in 2000s but I think I liked the original 80s series better!

Myself, I also collect retro video games which have been a love of mine since childhood. I have over 6500 games across just about every game system from Atari 2600 to PS5. Music will always be my first love, but video games are a close second!

I got into MAME a few years back and acquired lots of ROMs. It was great nostalgia, but as I feared with modern console gaming or MMORPGs, that I would forget to eat, sleep, or even leave a last will and testament if I continued, so I dropped it like a hot potato. ;)

No, I had to get out of such craziness and return to the normalcy of the constant fear my boxes of vinyl will fall on me while I sleep. :D

No need to get rid of MAME completely Tin! A quick round of Dig Dug or Frogger(*) every now and then is good for the soul :)

Though I hope you aren't really stacking them over your head, I will say that as a collectable, vinyl records are the superior format for music. As you probably know, if stored properly vinyl can last indefinitely whereas all these synthpop CDs I've bought over the years will eventually fail at some point to disc rot. 500 years from now, someone will be able to listen to the Ruby Red Mix of Don't Say No on your Heavenly Action L12" that you saved for sake of posterity!

Disc rot will also eventually destroy any disc-based video games I own, like PlayStation games. In fact, some collectors are already finding signs of disc rot and/or pinholes on Sega disc-based games. Similarly, old cartridges like Nintendo games will eventually fall to bit rot or other electrical problems (bad capacitors, leaked batteries, etc). VHS and cassette tapes deteriorate. Laserdiscs also get disc rot. DVDs can also fail due the separation of glue that holds layers together. Blu-rays - disc rot. Vinyl is forever.

(*) or Q*bert or Ms. Pac-Man or Centipede or... lol

Yes the original remains a classic! The best thing about that reboot was when they brought on the original Diana at the end! 😎

Agreed on all counts. I've dealt with disc rot and delamination nearly to the point of tears.

Although, when it comes to vinyl, I've noticed that more than one of my picture discs have discolored, and despite continued playability some old transparent colored vinyl have darkened too. So, while having considerably more longevity, vinyl does suffer the ravages of time in some ways.

As for sleeping safely, I have a bit more space now to not have those boxes towering above me...but I have had that predicament in past abodes! I did almost succumb to a vinyl landslide in my youth when a shelf failed after overloading it. If vinyl had sharper edges, I'd have been decapitated like David Warner in The Omen.
