What is your first earworm from The Neon?

Post by mrblue »

Hi friends, I'm sure you have been internalizing every note of The Neon all week like me. There are so many great melodies and catchy riffs, and the album keeps getting better with each listen.

What song has been stuck in your head the most this week? Mine is No Point In Tripping. It certainly has a way of tricking the mind into playing on repeat in my brain all day. What a great song!

I'll be fair, there are a fair few tracks I skip on The Neon. Also, I find the lyrics too wordy in places. Tower of Love is a good example - Andy repeats the same words twice in the first verse. I just can't listen to that track!

But, my goto track is Shot A Satellite. Love the synth work, Andy's lyrics and the entire track seems compact and classic Erasure.

Nerves of Steel is up there for me too, @Pughie. I really like it. Diamond Lies keeps getting stuck in my head too!

@moxxey - thanks for your honesty and I know how you feel. However, I feel confident your opinion of each song will change over time (hopefully for the better!). No need to skip any tracks though since the album is only what, 37 minutes long?? I haven't noticed what you mention in Tower of Love but I'll keep an ear out next time :)

I feel like we all went through the repetitive lyric phase with WBG, which I listened to the other day after a long stretch. Even though I don't like the heavy use of "baby" throughout the album, the songs are so ingrained in my head now that I hardly notice it. In fact, I couldn't wait for Sweet Summer Loving to come on while listening! Similarly, I remember many on the old Wonderland mailing list had problems with some lines in Sono Luminus, particularly "Our love is super love" (which is completely silly I'll admit and bothered me at first). But would I change one thing about that song if I could? No way!! lol

Also, one more note about Tower of Love. Listen to it with a decent pair of headphones and you can hear Andy harmonizing 3 parts for a few phrases. You'll hear the lower part in the left channel and higher part in the right. It's a great effect but almost unnoticeable without listening for it. It's little things like that which always make it great to come back to every Erasure song.

There is just something about the lyrics:
“Fly like a fallen angel
Love just like it’s second nature“
that get me every time. That’s the quintessential Erasure sound and an instant ear worm.

Lots of earworms for me. Fallen Angel, Diamond Lies, Carefull What I Try, Nerves, Shot, No Point to mame a few. The only dud for me is New Horizons, otherwise it's a very strong album!
