I’m not entirely convinced that The Two Ring Circus was ineligible for the charts, as the article suggests. My understanding (and admittedly perhaps my assumption) has always been that there’s no specific record of a chart position because it wasn’t treated as a separate release - it was considered an alternative version of The Circus and counted towards that album’s sales. After all, it shared the same catalogue number (albeit with a prefix for identification).

Where did the notion about it being ineligible due to its format as a double 45rpm album comes from? I’m not sure why that would disqualify it. For instance, Pop! 20 Hits was a double vinyl album, and it charted just fine. Also, Two Ring’s runtime would fall within the allowable limits for a standard album. I’ve never heard of RPM having any influence on chart eligibility either. On top of that, the CD and cassette versions weren’t even “double” albums - while they included bonus live tracks, the total runtime was still shorter than Pop! 20 Hits, which is one of Erasure’s five consecutive number-one albums.

What seems more likely to me is that sales of The Two Ring Circus were counted as part of The Circus rather than being tracked independently. This would be similar to how different formats of a single (7”, 12”, etc.) are combined into a single chart entry. That could explain why we don’t see a separate chart position for it.
