I find this incredibly intriguing and refreshingly unique; that's what I love about it. I don't believe it would be logical for him to produce a pop or synth-pop record, as he's been immersed in that genre since the late 1970s. I recall reading interviews where he expressed an interest in composing music for films, but he mentioned that it appeared to be a realm reserved for those in the big leagues. Well, I believe this new record could be his gateway into the world of movie soundtracks because it exudes that cinematic vibe. I think it's exceptionally beneficial for an artist to explore new avenues and embrace a completely different musical direction.

I don't disagree that artists should be encouraged to experiment and branch out. Vince has done scores for a few films, such as Bullfighter and Blood. I used to have both on DVD and both are terrible movies.

We'll see what the rest of the album brings, but so far, the lead track doesn't really scream SOLO Vince to me. It seems like a Reed & Vince project that perhaps Mute decided would make more money if they labeled it as a first-ever Vince solo project. I like the track, but you know... where is Vince in it? It's mostly Reed's cello.

Sadly there's a lot of truth in that. At first I thought it was Vince playing, but it's clearly a good cello player. And then came to the same conclusion: there's not a huge amount of Vince in this track.

Does anyone know if the other tracks are solely Vince or collaborations with Reed?

Certainly it is Reed playing cello, but it’s also obvious that Reed wrote that part. Vince knows nothing about composing for the cello.

So, it seems that his input into the lead track is more of a silent partner. I’ve only listened while watching the video, which I have some perhaps sad or ominous feelings about… and I hate to even put it in words. I get the feeling he wants to be truly seen and the cello relates his feelings, the music he would make if he were a true classical (orchestral) musician. (As we know, he’s always described himself as just a “lucky bastard” in the music world.)

VINCE CLARKE: SAVE THE DATE - VINCE CLARKE WILL BE PERFORMING 'SONGS OF SILENCE' LIVE IN LONDON IN NOVEMBER
I mentioned in last week's newsletter that there was some exciting news in the pipeline, and I am thrilled to be able to tell you that Vince Clarke, with Reed Hays, will be playing a very special concert in London on Friday 17th November to mark the release of his 'Songs of Silence' album which comes out the same day. We're just dotting the i's and crossing the t's with the venue before I can announce all the details, but we did want to give you a heads up now so you can keep the date free if you fancy coming along. What I can tell you is that Vince will be performing 'Songs of Silence' in its entirety, alongside some extra tracks from the project; that support will come from Daniel Miller and Gareth Jones' Sunroof; and that the show will take place in a small central London venue on the evening of Friday 17th November. More soon...
