I've seen it before, but only a few years ago. I think it might have been said that even that version isn't the original either.

I still have a problem with this guy stealing an image from a Russian stamp to create the original Crackers Cover and calling it his own.

Sheesh - we've got Dima in Russia making dozens of Erasure bootlegs and fake promos, Trump and family colluding with Putin, and now I found out Russians are behind the Crackers International cover art!  Pesky Russians!!

Just being silly, but genuinely curious - did James Marsh not paint the original (Russian stamp) artwork?  If so, that's pretty shady.  But perhaps it was his and the Russian govt just used it for a stamp?  Erasure have used stock images with other projects, like the Chorus (and related singles) photos...  maybe CI is the same type of thing?

On his own portfolio website, he puts the Crackers artwork in an archive section called 'pastiche' and refers to it as a 'Russian pastiche'.

https://jamesmarsh.com/old-site/Advertisingpages/past.htm (look for the cover art the scroll by at the bottom and click on it)

That suggests to me that it means he didn't do the original postage stamp artwork - but calling it a pastiche is a bit of stretch I think.

Having said that... according to an online bio, he was born in 1946 so he is certainly old enough and has been working in the art/design field long enough that he could be the artist who did the original postage stamp.

I don't know Russian, but I'm guessing it says something like 'Merry Christmas 1977... although Happy New Year would make more sense, especially with the clock striking midnight.

Also... see this:

https://fineart.ha.com/itm/mai.....-canv/a/5185-72629.s

Someone is selling an original copy of the "New Improved Yuletide" artwork - which was for a Christmas card - from 1979, which puts it in a similar time-frame.

The description states "New Improved Yuletide, TBWA Worldwide Christmas card illustration, 1979."

(not sure if it was a corporate one or not as Pughie put it, but I'm sure it's satirical and not a real soap powder!   )

One thing to note about the New Improved Yuletide artwork is that it is initialed 'JM'.

My guess, in this instance at least, is that the Limited Edition of Crackers used re-purposed artwork by James Marsh himself. It is literally a crop of the very same artwork!

Some Wikipedia notes on TBWA Worldwide too -  and advertising agency: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TBWA_Worldwide -

I'm guessing the postcard was an internal thing sent to staff or clients or something.

Speaking of artwork, and going slightly OT for a second, I REALLY want to see the ORIGINAL '88 single artwork for...you guessed it, Phantom Bride.

...and before someone accuses me of making that one up (like the original extended version which Greg showed me was held in Mute's vaults...which is TRUE), at least this one is acknowledged by the artist.

https://web.archive.org/web/20.....rom=&ucat=8&

Before Richard got to him, I did actually track him and Slim Smith down for an interview when I helped run erasure.org, but it never panned out. Damn that Richard's charisma...

Seriously no more Tin Soldier- the Phantom Bride persona must be your own. Any slight angle to get Phantom Bride in the mix of discussion must be Mr Phantom Bride. You personify the poor boy from the outside of town looking for the Phantom cover of a Phantom Single that must still be in the vaults of area 51. The mystery artwork from the scrapped 4th single will linger in the mysteries of world.
