I'm very excited about this release as a single,i know the original  as soon as i heard the Steeleye Span version. Its eithergoing to be a Christmas turkey or a genius move,i'm thinking the latter. I can't wait to hear Vince's synth version covered with Andy's trademark layered vocals.

Listen to the original sung live in 2004

Keeping an open mind so I can be pleasantly surprised! Not a fan of the original so will be interesting to hear Erasures' take on it.

Wonder if we'll be getting a physical CD single of this?
Also relatively encouraged by the references to 'first single' - I wonder if this slightly spooky/mystical song will come out in the last week of October, and then a more overtly Christmas track early December?

Is anyone disappointed that the first single is a cover?

Well, a 16th century psalm sung in latin isn't exactly Winter Wonderland as far as the classics go, but until i hear it Erasure-fied the jury is oot....

I do however think that 'the single that never was but should have been a single' i.e. She Won't Be Home, could keep Shite Factor's obligatory offering off the UK No.1 spot.

I would love to see that happen, but I think that's a long shot.

Done in the style of "Crown of Thorns" should make it sound very Medieval indeed

Agree with DMode here. I'm thinking that heavy base sound of God Rest You Merry Gentlemen too! We await the snippet which im sure will be released soon.

It takes them back to their original harmonic roots, the beginnings and the continuations ... very exciting.

Yes, that is exactly what I had in mind as well! Erasure are always good for a surprise in their music. (For example: I hated the song "Whitch in the ditch at first VERY much, now I love it - 'cause it is unusual). I didn't hear the album "other people songs" yet as I  had the prejudice it is a lot of rubbish (wich I read a lot of people here still think) but I heard already songs sung by Andy that I definately like as a cover (amazingly!). so I intent to give this song a chance! As well for the reason  - I never heard this song in my life - because it is a very unusal song probably not liked by many folk as it is nothing like "Last Christmas". I like the song "Crown of Thorns" very much as well for Andys deep voice    So I look forward to Andys deep voice with this song!

I think we need to nudge Chris Evans into getting the first play of the single
