Depeche Mode - MODE

A literal ‘black celebration’ of Depeche Mode’s career with all albums across 14 CDs and four CDs of bonus material.

Sony will issue a new 18CD Depeche Mode box set called simply MODE, in November.

The box set collects all 14 studio albums and includes four bonus discs of chronological non-album material (b-sides, bonus tracks and non-album material).

This is a numbered, limited-edition set (no word on how limited) and is housed in a minimalist black cube, with each disc similarly enclosed in a black, heavyweight card wallet. The albums’ original covers have been re-interpreted in special black-on-black designs exclusive to the box set.

As well as the discs, this set comes with a 228 page, gilt-edged book containing all of Depeche Mode’s lyrics, compiled together for the first time. There is no mention of remastering at all, at this stage.

MODE will be released on 22 November 2019 and costs an eye watering £200+

And I wondered why Apple Music had only black and white artwork suddenly for all the DM albums.

I'll likely get this at some point, but it's not screaming to get into my collection. The 12" box reissues were a little more appealing, actually.

For a boxset, CD especially, containing tracks more easily obtained digitally now, I need something unique and aesthetic to tip me over the edge towards purchase. I've visually hypothesized what would be popular for Erasure sets, but for anyone's album anthology set, you need to be careful when looking at the past through the current aesthetic-biased eye; especially when it comes to sales.

You want to market such a set and have it sell well? You need to to tip the balance towards those seemingly vintage aesthetics to attract the eye of those who might see this and assume what's within is the sound of the current DM - and that's a band not all their past audience embrace.

Get the balance right, Sony.

Design wise I love it and do much prefer everything to be 'unified'. Unless DM never do anything else ever again, a set like this is always going to be 'of the moment' - it will be out of date as soon as the next album comes out. Besides, I don't think anybody paying the £195 for this set is going to be unaware of the difference between DM's 'modern' material and their early tinklypop early days. If you're spending that kind of money on stuff you've never heard, then.. well.. I have no words.

Having said all that, unless I have some kind of windfall (I might give the Euromillions another try if it reaches £170 million again), I won't be buying this. I already own almost all of DM's albums - and many of the singles - on CD twice already. I don't need them again in pretty box that is difficult to store.

It also actually makes me happy that this does NOT include the exploitative addition of a small selection of unreleased/rare tracks dug out from some archives to tempt completest fans. It means we can choose not to buy it without missing out on anything. This is the way the 'Moscow To Mars' anthology SHOULD have been done. No 'extras', just everything - or a compilation from everything - released thus far.

Very interesting! I was wondering when DM would be putting out a big boxset of their own, and here we are! I have to echo kwerty's sentiments exactly: this is not really a necessary purchase for any longterm fan, and not worth the high price. If Sony had included some previously unreleased stuff, it would be a much harder call to make because I'm a sucker for boxsets (well, and unreleased stuff from my favorite bands).

This would probably be a day one purchase for me if all the albums after Exciter were correctly remastered to CD. Playing The Angel, as originally released on CD, is a loud mess. Sounds of the Universe is a bit better, but still loud. I've gone ahead and made stereo mixdowns from the 5.1 releases of those albums which sound much, much better. If nothing is remastered, there's really no reason to buy this boxset except to have a nice box to look at, since I already have every track included (often more than once!)

kwerty, you bring up another good point about having Speak & Spell and Spirit in the same set! Sure, there's no shortage of fans who love and buy anything DM. But when you compare DM to say, Erasure or OMD, DM have pretty much disowned their early material. Aside from the occasional retro throwback of Just Can't Get Enough, could you really see DM performing A Photograph of You or Photographic nowadays? Whereas OMD seems to embrace their early stuff, performing albums live in full, you'd just never see DM touch anything earlier than, say, Stripped.

That said, if money were no object I'd certainly love to own it. But... I'll await any news about possible remastering before deciding whether or not to buy.

I don't know if this helps, but Daniel Barassi (of depechemode.com and who apparently pulled the set together) was asked on Twitter "Is the audio for some/all of the albums remastered at all?" and he answered:

"CD 1-10: 2006/7 DDP files. CD 11-14: existing masters. CD 15-18: various sources, mostly me pulling from master tapes (not recycling existing masters). Nothing was specifically "remastered" again. Be sure to note some highlights: Dressed In Black (Record Mirror), Flexi-Pop, etc."

Very cool, thank you for posting that! Looks like an easy pass for me then. I want to say that it feels like a shame, but then I think to myself "do I really need or want to spend $200+ to rebuy these albums again??" No, no I don't.

Plus, like you said - it will be obsolete the moment a new single or album comes out. DM have enough fans that will click Buy with barely a blink, but other than an easy profit, there's not much reason for this box to exist.
